When you move to a new town and purchase an old, unmaintained farm home, it can certainly be quite a challenge. Pretty much everything on this home was 1974 original with very little upgrades or maintenance done on the home.

Every bathroom shower was moldy and you could see through the drywall, the original shag carpet shredded to nothing in some areas, the roof leaked and water came dripping in when it rained, some of the windows broken as they also were original, down to the hot water tank being original and even still working! The stucco on the exterior was cracked and falling off.

But the gas fireplaces worked well along with the gorgeous brick and rock surrounds. The home structure was well built and was worth stripping back and starting fresh on everything! So that’s what we did. Especially because the property is gorgeous and well worth the updates it was crying out for. So after pulling everything off and bringing the home back to studs inside and out, we were able to start fresh with the layout to work with the existing basement beams without having to do any major structural changes to the home. We worked with the existing window headers and framed most of the windows deeper with new windows to enjoy the beautiful mountain views (and see the chickens of course). All the plumbing, electrical and heating was updated. The exterior walls made deeper to allow for insulation to be brought up to new code making the home efficient to heat in winter and cool in summer. Fresh drywall, flooring, cabinets, lighting and exterior siding all added to the new fresh feeling this home deserved and the layout much more efficient for our family needs. We even managed to reuse a few little treasures that were in great shape such as the ensuite bathroom medicine cabinet and pineapple shaped light fixture over the stairwell. Check out the before and afters and the in-betweens of what it took to make this home feel brand new again.
